You will spend time on Friday (6B) and next week (both classes) researching one topic on Rome.

On Friday, you will have 60+ minutes to research facts starting with this site.  If needed, you should then move to other relevant web sites.  You need to document at least ten key items relating to the topic.   What you have done with the project will be checked-in Monday.  You will be able to continue fine tuning the details next week.  The presentations to the class will take place Wednesday.

6B - Complete the Inferences worksheet.  After you read the text, choose whether each item is a fact or inference.

Monday, February 11th

Social Studies:
Prepare for Wednesday's Chapter 8 Test.  Make sure your notes are great!  You can use them on your test.  Just having your notes complete is step 1.  Step 2: be familiar with your notes so you can easily answer the 20 questions on the test.

Chinese New Year!  Complete the Chinese Zodiac chart for all of your family members.  Complete the "dots" worksheet.  If you can't see any of the numbers, do the best you can!

Make sure you are caught up with your notes.  Your Chapter 8 Social Studies Test (where you can use notes) is next Wednesday.

Thursday, February 7th 

Reading:
"The Dog of Pompeii" test is Friday.  Make sure you read the story at least one more time.  Forty percent of the test is based on comprehension.

In case you don't have the vocabulary words (worth 20 points), they are as follows:

Wednesday, February 6th

Reading: 
Reminder to students that did not yet turn in the Vocab worksheet from last night.

As mentioned to all students over the past several weeks, the homework policy is becoming more strict (consistent for grades 6-8).  If your homework is more than 2 days late, it will no longer be accepted.  Excused absences have additional time.


You will have a test on "The Dog of Pompeii" Friday.

Read!  As mentioned in class, our number of minutes for independent reading is going to be reduced until after ISAT.  On the nights you don't have formal work that you will turn in, you should read.  As is the case tonight: read your novel for 30 minutes.

Reading:
Poetry - complete your Haiku!  Don't forget to follow the 5-7-5 syllable format.  It should be decorated in a way that represents your words.  Make it wall worthy!

Background information:

What to write about?: Haiku-poems can describe almost anything, but you seldom find themes which are too complicated. Some of the most thrilling Haiku-poems describe daily situations in a way that gives the reader a brand new experience of a well-known situation.

Haiku can be based on your own everyday experiences. A haiku can be funny, serious, or even just a "snapshot" of a moment or a scene. You will have 20 minutes for this assignment, then have students share their best poems in their groups or with the class.

The metrical pattern of Haiku: Haiku-poems consist of respectively 5, 7 and 5 syllables in three units.

The seasonal theme: Each Haiku must contain a kigo, a season word, which indicate in which season the Haiku is set. For example, cherry blossoms indicate spring, snow indicate winter, and mosquitoes indicate summer, but the season word isn't always that obvious.

Writing:
Your second and final draft of the 1000 words story is due Tuesday, January 22nd.  It can be neatly hand written or typed.  If you email it to me (because you have no means of printing), I will print it on your behalf.  Make sure your name is on your typed copy!  In case you don't have it handy, my email is kresh@cps.edu.
